Crosland Chroma is a love child born at the intersection of public art and public safety. The piece creates an ephemeral representation of the diverse body of knowledge contained within the library, breaking up the pure full spectrum light of the sun into a brillant chromatic symphony of color that bathes the spaces of the terrace and provides a new lens through which to view the Atlanta skyline.
The piece is made from polycarbonate sheets that are laminated with a dichroic film and vertically tensioned from a steel frame. The screen creates a safety barrier for the edge of the two terraces at the top of The Price Gilbert Memorial Library on the Georgia Tech Campus. The new steel frame serves as the primary structural frame and is attached to an existing three dimensional frame constructed of HSS members that are connected to the primary structural frame of the building.
